4 Signs Your Home Needs New Windows

Posted on: 5 August 2016

Most homeowners do not spend a lot of time thinking about their windows, and many homes have windows that are many years old. It can be expensive to replace the windows in your home, but new window installation can save you a substantial amount of money on your energy bills while also adding value to your home. The following are common signs that it is time for your windows to be replaced:

Your Home is Drafty

Windows should be a protective barrier for your home that keeps air out, but as windows age they can wear out and may no longer be tightly sealed. Over time wood windows can warp and leave small gaps for air to flow through, and in aluminum windows the corners of the frames may become loose and no longer keep a tight seal against outside air. If you can feel air flowing in from the outside while you are standing near any of the windows in your home, it is time to have new windows installed.

Windows are Difficult to Operate

If you have old windows that are very difficult to open or close, it is usually a good idea to replace them. This can especially be true for very old single or double hung windows, as over time these types of windows can develop balance problems which may cause them to slam shut and create a safety hazard if the glass breaks. Metal windows may begin to rust, which can make opening and closing them much more difficult. If you have wood windows and the wood begins to rot with age you may lose the ability to properly open and close the window.

The Locks on Your Windows No Longer Work

If the locks on your windows no longer work properly, your home will be less secure and it may be easier for an intruder to break in. Broken locks may also allow air to flow into your house, since window locks help close a window securely and create an air tight seal. When your window locks begin breaking, start getting quotes to see how much it will cost to have new windows installed.

Condensation Between the Window Panes

If you notice condensation or fog in the glass of your window, it means the seal has failed and moisture is able to get in between the panels. When this happens, your window will no longer be able to insulate your home properly and it is time for replacement.

Choosing Great Looking Windows

After I fixed up my yard, I realized that my home itself could use some curb appeal. I decided that one of the biggest eyesores on my home other than the porch with the flaking paint was the windows, so I started shopping for replacements. I was able to find a great deal at a local window shop, and to my surprise, they had a large variety of windows available. It was incredible to find windows that were as functional as they were beautiful, and when they were installed I was really pleased with the outcome. This blog is all about choosing great looking windows.
