Tips For Maintaining Your Home's Siding

Posted on: 9 September 2016

If you have a home, you might have siding on it in order to protect the base materials that your house it built out of and to improve the overall aesthetics of your house. Here are some tips for making sure that you are able to maintain your siding so that it looks as good as possible.

1. Wooden Siding

If you have wooden siding, your main concern is going to be rot. You want to be sure that your wooden siding is protected from this issue by reapplying a sealant as often as the manufacturer recommends. You can either do this yourself or hire a maintenance crew to do it for you. You could also stagger your sealant applications so that you don't every have to do the entire house and instead only have to do part of the house.

Aside from making sure that the sealant is maintained to keep water out, you will also need to hose down your wooden siding occasionally in order to ensure that it looks as good as possible. To wash it down quickly, you can simply use a hose that puts out a medium-powered stream of water. You don't want to use a power washer or something that has a high-powered stream or else you risk accidentally damaging the wood of your siding. You can also use oxygen bleach, which tends to be relatively gentle, if you think your siding needs a deeper clean.

2. Vinyl Siding

If you have vinyl or plastic siding, you will need to use a cleaning solution specific to the vinyl so that you don't accidentally damage it. Use a long-handled brush to slowly start to wash off any gook that might be on the siding. Start from the bottom and work your way up. Once you reach the top, make sure that you use a hose on a medium-pressure setting to rinse off all of the vinyl cleaner before it dries to avoid accidentally leaving a stain. If you see any mold stains, use vinegar and water to get them out.

3. Steel Siding

If you have steel siding, apply a mixture of vinegar and water to the siding and rinse it off using a power washer. You can use a power washer on steel siding because it is strong enough to deal with the pressure. This will allow you to clean your siding easily and quickly.

Choosing Great Looking Windows

After I fixed up my yard, I realized that my home itself could use some curb appeal. I decided that one of the biggest eyesores on my home other than the porch with the flaking paint was the windows, so I started shopping for replacements. I was able to find a great deal at a local window shop, and to my surprise, they had a large variety of windows available. It was incredible to find windows that were as functional as they were beautiful, and when they were installed I was really pleased with the outcome. This blog is all about choosing great looking windows.
